Community Engagement
Our schools are an integral part of our wider
communities. Since our inception, Facing History has been reaching out
to those wider communities-providing occasions to study the past,
explore new ideas and approaches, and develop practical models for
civic engagement that link history to the challenges of an increasingly
interconnected world of choices.
Community Conversations
Facing History and Ourselves and The Allstate Foundation present a
series of community-wide dialogues across the U.S.. Prominent scholars,
authors, filmmakers and policy leaders speak and participate in
discussions about civic engagement, individual and collective
responsibility, and tolerance.
Choosing to Participate
One of our major community
outreach efforts over the past year has been the Choosing to
Participate (CTP) initiative. CTP includes an exhibition, a study guide
and community programs that highlight stories that illuminate the power
of individual civic choices-decisions that people make everyday about
others in their community and nation. The CTP exhibit invites people of
all ages to explore the relationship between the individual and
society, to think about how we connect ourselves to others, and to
relate the past to the present.
Raising Ethical Children
Formed by a group of long-time Facing History friends and supporters whose lives were becoming increasingly busy and focused on their children, they hoped to learn—to get insight from experts and from each other on how to best parent their young kids. Raising Ethical Children has become a national series with gatherings taking place in homes around the country.
