Fundamental Freedoms: Eleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

May 29, 2010

"The realization that the flagrant violation of human rights by Nazi and Fascist countries sowed the seeds of the last world war has supplied the impetus for the work which brings us to the moment of achievement here today.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

On May 19, Facing History and Ourselves hosted a workshop at the PBS Headquarters in Washington, D.C. on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and our newly published resource, Fundamental Freedoms: Eleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The workshop included teachers, professors, and school administrators, and featured Dr. Allida Black, director and editor of the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers. Black partnered with Facing History in developing Fundamental Freedoms. Together, workshop participants explored the impetus for the UDHR's creation, vision, and aspiration, as well as the role of education in human rights today.
