Throughout our organisation's history, Facing History and Ourselves has provided professional development services to over 500 teachers in Great Britain with effective content and teaching strategies. We opened an office in London, which also serves as our international hub, in 2005. Facing History has trained more than 200 educators in England from more than 90 schools, museums, NGOs, and universities in week-long seminars. Facing History has facilitated workshops at institutions of higher education including the Institute of Education and Southampton University, and has worked in partnership with the Imperial War Museum, the Jewish Museum, and the Schools Linking Project. The majority of Facing History’s work is directly with teachers and schools.
Recognizing the uniqueness of each school and borough, we use various training models for flexible implementation of our courses. Many schools find Facing History to be an invaluable partner in meeting the requirements of England's National Curriculum. For those interested in a tailored professional development plan, please be in touch with us.

Your contribution to Facing History and Ourselves will help provide teachers with innovative professional development, classroom resources, and ongoing support to help them lead their students in an examination of racism, ethnic and religious discrimination, and prejudice. Through the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations, we can offer our programme to teachers at little or no cost to them and their schools.

Changing School Culture
"Facing History has had a huge effect on me as an educator. . . . [it] has become not only an approach to teaching about the Holocaust and other difficult histories but more of a holistic pedagogical philosophy that infuses all my teaching."
Joanne Upton, Facing History Educator
Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys

Anthony Smith's Students Question and Challenge Injustices |
"I want my students to be able to make choices where they see wrongs or moral uncertainties; to not be bystanders, but to be upstanders," says Anthony Smith, Assistant Head Teacher at Notre Dame Roman Catholic Girls' School, London. He credits Facing History and Ourselves, which is part of the curriculum across all subjects in the school, with helping students make sense of the incomprehensible. Smith spoke at Facing History's 2011 UK benefit dinner. |

"You Learn to Listen to People's Points of View:" Tamika A. |
Tamika A., a student at Notre Dame Roman Catholic Girls' School, London, shares some of the lessons of her Facing History and Ourselves class. Studying discrimination in the United States in 1957 and other instances of injustice, Tamika and her classmates have learned the importance of not judging a whole group of people based on what some individuals do. Learning about the International Criminal Court, they have wrestled with questions such as whether justice is possible after genocide and whether a child soldier is a victim or a perpetrator. Tamika spoke at the Facing History and Ourselves 2011 UK benefit dinner. |
